Christine Smith who dedicated many years to the ELI, enjoyed traveling and, in particular, she valued attending and presenting at TESOL conferences. She found each location a new and exciting opportunity for research and exploration.
As a strong testament to her belief in the importance of professional development and to nurture this ideal at the ELI, we are pleased to offer scholarships in Christine Smith’s memory for the purpose of attending a conference or other related professional development event.
There will be an annual scholarship fund of up to a maximum of $6000 to finance travel to conferences for two instructors, one for a North American and one for international.
An instructor may, for example, spend four to five days at a conference in North America up to a maximum cost of $3000, taking into account reasonable, mid-range accommodation. The cost of an international trip would be covered up to a maximum of $3000. All travel arrangements must be made in consultation with the Program Assistant and receipts for reimbursement must be submitted to Accounting department within 10 days of return or before March 31.
Recipients must also write a brief report for the PD blog within one month, and present at a PD meeting in the current or following session. They must also send a letter to the Smith family describing their experience at the conference.
Presenters will have priority and receipt of previous PD funding will be considered.
Expectations of instructors who used the Christine Smith Scholarship to attend conferences:
Successful recipients will be asked to write a report that will be posted on the ELI PD blog within one month of the completion of the activity/event, and must present at an in-house PD event. Instructors are encouraged to submit an article to the TEAL Newsletter.
Deadline: October 31
